I’ve owned a couple of these nebula portable projectors now and this one is really marketed for children. Kudos for the safety feature that turns off the projection when something is within a certain few inches of it, like a wondering 2 year old. Specs could be better for the price range. You not gonna get much with 100 lumens and not even native HD 720. It works in a pinch, for entertaining little children in a dark room since they can’t discern the difference between 540 or 720. Sound is adequate for its size. A plus is it charges via usb-c, which means you can plug into a power bank for ultimate portability. Nice!
No horizontal keystone correction. I had to return it & but Capsule Max. But if that’s not the requirement it’s worth buying for the form factor & portability. Switching between the remote & the Nebula app for some of the applications can be cumbersome at times. Battery lasts for about 1.5 hours if used in normal brightness, to achieve 2.5 hours we have to switch to battery mode which reduces the brightness.
Let’s start with the most important part, the projector. The Astro is a compact lightweight spherical projector geared towards kids that gets the job done in the appropriate environment. It is not much larger than a navel orange, which really helps to put this thing into perspective. When I first brought it outside one evening, my friends actually thought it was just a Bluetooth speaker and were very surprised when I turned on the projector. The underlying Operating System is android 7.1 with a special skin or theme geared towards children that you could customize the color or a small character like an astronaut or a dinosaur; it really helps to engage the child when they see the interface. The parental controls work well and require a pin code to be entered to make any changes to app or settings. The Eye-guard technology is simple and effective, it has proven to work just about instantly during my tests and I trust it with my toddler who does not know any better. The brightness or lumens for the projector are acceptable for the target audience, children or adults in a pinch of on-the-go entertainment. I am able to project onto my white walls at home during the day and able to project on a brick wall outside in the evening. The speakers sound good for the size of the projector and are able to project well in an open environment indoors or outdoors. The projector itself has four buttons, power, volume up/down and Bluetooth/project. The remote has 13 buttons that make navigation very straight forward, list from the top down: Power, HDMI source, mouse, up, down, left, right, enter, back, home, menu and volume up/down. Popular streaming services like Netflix or Amazon prime require that you install the official mobile app titled “Nebula Connect” on your iOS or Android device. The connect app allows for text input and trackpad like navigation once connected to the projector. Just this past week Hurricane Isaias happened to come on through and take out our power for 48 hours. I planned ahead and copied some local content to a USB key and watched for about 2.5 hours, I also enabled hotspot on my mobile and streamed content from YouTube for a while with no issues. Once the lower power indicator alerted me, I connected an external power pack and was able to continue watching for the rest of the evening. I would like to stress that this device is not something to replace your TV at home, if that is something you are looking to do the yet to be released Nebula Cosmos (1080P) or Cosmos Max (4K) models should be released soon. If things happen to not work as expected or you find an issue I personally have had great results from contacting the Anker support team. I order and distribute Nebula Capsules at work for on the go presentations and their support staff have been nothing less than fantastic.
Everything is the expected
It doesn’t have top notch features, but works great for kids, even better considering the price tag!
